Why We Love Staying At Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

AKL1

One of the youngest of all of Walt Disney World’s deluxe resorts, Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL) opened in April of 2001. And if I’m being perfectly honest, I always resisted staying there. When we can afford to stay at a deluxe resort, one of the perks is the unique transportation each resort offered. Monorail for Polynesian, Contemporary and Grand Floridian. Boat transport for Wilderness Lodge, Boardwalk and Beach & Yacht Club resorts. The ability to walk to parks from Contemporary and the EPCOT resorts.

There’s nothing wrong with bus transportation, especially at Walt Disney World, but busses seemed to take such a long time. And Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL) is entirely bus transportation for every park. But the begging and pleading from our children wore us down and happened to coincide with a special offer. A win-win.

You can view the animals from your balcony or any of the outdoor viewing areas for an up close and personal experience.

Why We Love AKL Transportation

As we were checking in, and the Cast Member was helping us with our bags, he asked if we had ever stayed here before. No, we said and I told him what had kept us (well, me) away. He quickly corrected me and told me that actually, Animal Kingdom had the best/quickest transportation on the property.

  • Busses were dedicated to that resort – ONLY.
  • As a result, after a stop or two (all on Animal Kingdom Lodge property) you were quickly on your way to your destination.

And on our first day, we found that he was absolutely right! It became one of our favorite resorts at Walt Disney World but for much more than speedy transportation.

Why We Love The Rooms

The rooms are themed beautifully and many have a savanna view. Imagine waking up to a giraffe walking by your balcony!

Why We Love The Dining Options

AKL is home to some of the most unique dining experiences at Walt Disney World.

  • Boma – Buffet-style dining that features African, French, Malaysian and Indian cuisine.
  • Jiko – A full-service dining experience known for its extensive selection of South African wines.
  • Sanaa – A colorful setting with windows overlooking the “savanna” featuring Indian and African cuisine.
  • The Mara – The resort’s self-service dining location. A variety of dining selections but you can still find South African wines and the coveted Zebra Domes (a favorite dessert.)

Located at the top right corner of my 10 year old’s sampling of Boma’s dessert selection is the famous Zebra Dome. Yummy!
Why We Love The Amenities

And like the other Disney resorts, there is plenty to do aside from eating and sleeping. In terms of “extras” with your stay, Animal Kingdom Lodge is hands-down our favorite.

  • Uzima – The large swimming area, made to look like a huge watering hole. There is “zero-entry” for the little ones, a 67-foot water slide, a separate kiddie pool, and two whirlpool areas.
  • Samawati Springs – Located at the Disney Vacation Club section, Kidani Village, this is another zero-entry pool and water playground.
  • Simba’s Clubhouse – For children 3-12, they can be entertained while you have some adults-only time. Games, arts & crafts, video, and board games, even dinner is provided, Currently, the cost is $15/hour with a 2-hour minimum.
  • Fitness Center and Health club – Complete with exercise equipment and massage and spa services.
  • Arcades and playgrounds
  • Tennis Courts
  • Evening campfires with African storytelling.
  • African craft stations in the lobby
  • 24/7 Animal Viewing – Even if your room doesn’t overlook one of the savannas you can view the animals day or night. In the evening,  special night-vision viewers are provided at the outdoor viewing areas.
  • Special events in the main lobby. (We attended a New Year’s event that was spectacular!)
Check out the assortment of activities scheduled around the property, from the lobby to the pool to areas around the grounds.

My husband is not a fan of the hustle and bustle that a Disney vacation always seems to encourage. A stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge, far from the (madding) crowds, is his favorite way to recharge and relax!

Give it a try. I think you’ll agree!
